Wilderness

Karekare is famous for its surf beaches backed by sheer volcanic cliffs and rainforest. The walking trails around Karekare are but part of 240 km of tracks in the Waitakere Ranges. Visit the Arataki Information Centre for a panoramic view of Auckland's twin harbours and to experience the culture of Kawerau ā Maki while being introduced to New Zealand's flora and fauna.

Art

Titirangi Village, where coffee culture meets art and craft, stands at the southern gateway to the Waitakere Ranges. Great restaurants and galleries showcasing many of the region's top creative talents.

Wine

Within forty five minutes drive is the nearby wine country, home to many of New Zealand's world-renowned vinters. Here you will find boutique restaurants closely associated with the top vineyards serving quality local produce to be enjoyed with a glass or two of their premium wines.

Adventure

If canyoning or abseiling under showering moss and fern covered waterfalls appeals AWOL adventures can guide you to the amazing blue canyon just minutes from Karekare Beach Lodge.

Surfing for the experienced is sensational at many Waitakere West Coast locations. Just over the hill from Karekare a surf school operates during the summertime at Piha. Board rentals are also available.

An equestrian centre offering pony guides for children and tuition at all levels is but one of the experiences at Kiwi Valley. Horse trekking is available in the nearby Bethells Valley, site of many location shoots for the Xena and Hercules; television series.
